Fall is knocking on our door step – can you feel it yet?
As much as our family enjoys apple picking, scarecrow making and pumpkin baking, we don’t enjoy the live germs the cold weather brings. At the beginning of the season, I follow a checklist to make sure I have all the needed items in case a cold does appear. There are many ways a cold can be naturally assisted in the recovery process.
10 Natural Ways to Help Beat the Common Cold:
1. Lemon, Ginger Tea:
One of our favorite ways to soothe a sore throat is through warm hydration such as tea. According to WebMd, ginger can be used as pain relief from respiratory tract infections, cough and bronchitis. We drink this tea whenever symptoms start to appear and sometimes just because at nighttime. Add fresh ginger and water in a saucepan and heat until starting to simmer. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon. Using a stainer, pour into mugs and add honey if choose.
2. Get Rest. Sometimes achieving the rest you may need can be difficult however it is very beneficial. The body needs rest to recover. Take advantage of the down time by reading a book, meditating, watching TV or simply sleeping.
3. Honey.
Honey is thick and therefore a great way to help soothe a sore throat or suppress a cough. We take 1 tsp every few hours. Throat lozenges with honey is recommended but not for small children. Remember no honey for children under one.
4. Neti pot. If you haven’t used a neti pot for relieving sinus pressure in the face I highly recommend it. Of course it’s odd and the first time you embrace it may be strange but it helps to thin mucus and flush nasal passages. (We use this for adults.)
5. Steam Shower.
Another great method for releasing mucus is through steam. Turn the shower up hot and sit outside it for fifteen minutes. You can even close the drain and add your favorite essential oil such as eucalyptus.
6. Sleeping straight up. Although it may be different, adding pillows to sit up at night can help drain the mucus to keep the flow with gravity.
7. Chicken Noodle Soup.
Not only do researches believe chicken noodle soup may have anti-inflammation properties but it’s also a great way to stay hydrated.
8. Drink plenty of water. Fluids such as juice, water and broth help loosen congestion and release mucus.
9. Apple Cider Vinegar.
ACV helps alkaline the body from its acid state. Our family uses of mix of ACV, warm water, honey and lemon or you can mix two tablespoons in water.
10. Chest Rub. If choosing a chest rub, go with a homemade one like this or you can always purchase one. Our family favorite is this certified organic one.
