My daughter loves to play dress up. There’s something special about being a veterinarian, firefighter or her favorite, a princess.
Lately, she says she’s a mommy which makes my heart melt. She watches me in the mirror put on my make-up and asks, “Can I have some?” Or brush my hair and says, “Can I have the brush too?” She studies, learns and waits for me to give her anything I have. I found her in my jewelry box the other day and I thought, “Wow, she really needs her own play jewelry!”
She loves to sit at her table and bead pipe cleaners for bracelets. I love that she’s improving her fine motor skills. It’s a win-win situation. This time, I thought of a way to incorporate some math skills into her arts/crafts time.
Materials Needed:
- Ten pipe cleaners (or whatever number your child is learning to count to)
- Beads (make sure you have enough for each number!)
- Construction paper
- Pen/Marker
- Hole puncher
This project is an easy prep. Cut out a shape for your numbers. I choose a circle. Fold a piece of construction paper (I did 6 times) as many as you can and trace one circle. Cut it out. This way, you can cut a shape once instead of six times etc. Just makes it easier.
Write numbers on your shape and using the hole punch, make a hole.
Place a pipe cleaner through each piece of paper and the number bracelet is ready to be made!
Because Miss 2 is still learning her numbers, I choose to go in order with her. However, if your child is learning to count by 2’s, make bracelets of even numbers or odd numbers or whatever you are teaching. The purpose is to be educational and fun at the same time.
(PS This shot was taken by Mr 4. Not too bad :))
I would ask Miss 2, “What is this number?” Then say, “Show me how many beads go on the bracelet.”
Before long, she caught on quickly…
And for the rest of the day, she stayed, all dressed up.
How do you make learning math fun in your home?

Great idea, my daughter at that age would craft all day long!!!
Thanks Tara! I hope she enjoys it as much as my daughter!
I love this idea! I will have to remember it for my #4 girl who is almost 3. I linked up behind you at the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party, so I’m pinning these on my boards!
Great idea & easy to do! Pinning for later use. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
