Last week, I went to the library and pulled out some books. Well okay, 62 books. I asked the librarian how many I could take and she told me one hundred! Jeepers! I thought I was crazy walking through the parking lot, holding two little hands with 62 books, but when I got home I really appreciated all the books I had. I took out quite a few on the body and made a morning out of activities. I hope you enjoy our activities and perhaps can somehow help with your body unit as well!
There are two books that the kids and I really enjoyed reading. I started the morning off with Scholastic’s Discover More: My Body.
This book is excellent! It has detailed descriptions of body parts, yet pictures and BIG words for preschoolers to understand. I actually didn’t read it all to my children but broke it up in parts. We read the inside/outside body parts, hair/skin, bones, breathing and blood sections. Later this week, we will discuss the eating portion and 5 senses sections of the book. It really is a great resource.
Next, we traveled to our body pictures. We did these for a different unit last week that I will share soon. It was on building confidence and finding what they love about themselves! (Soon to come!)
In all, take large paper and draw the outside of their body shape. I used a pen and traced back over with black crayon but use whatever works for you! Next, we looked in the book and studied the photos of the inside and outside body parts.
I cut out a few body pieces from construction paper (heart, throat, brain, stomach, lungs) and had them paste it on their body! I asked questions like, “What does the stomach do?” and “What do lungs help you do?”
They really enjoyed making the connections that they just learned. I would touched each of their body parts so they would know where they are inside their own body as well. I would ask, “Can you feel your heartbeat?” or “When you take a deep breath, what happens to your lungs?”
We also did some paper school work as well.
And followed up with the song, “Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes.”
We then came back for another story called, My Feet by Aliki.
We really LOVED this book. It describes the parts of the foot: heel, sole and toes. We pointed out each others toes, arch and heel bone as well. We really made this book come alive and did the actions on each page. For example it says, “Sometimes for fun, I walk on my heels.” So we went around the room walking on our heels, or jumping on the balls of our feet. We had a blast! On a side not, my toddler really enjoyed this book as well.
We finished our morning with a foot and art craft. I took out another roll of paper and we painted our feet and hands!
By the way, this masterpiece is now the center piece across our school room. The kids enjoy looked at their hands and feet and it’s beautiful!
So, I want to know…
How do you teach about the body?
