Last week, when we looked out our classroom window, we noticed the color of the leaves have changed! I have to admit, I became giddy as I thought of many activities that we can do with them.
I quickly put on their shoes and headed them outside for some fall leaf fun!
We took a walk around our local park and collected…you guessed it…
Lots of leaves!
We first studied all the leaves. We talked about their color, veins, stems and scent of Fall.
ACTIVITY #1 – Leaf Imprints
Then, I asked each one to pick out their favorite leaf.
(Yes, we are now in Halloween costumes. Because it’s just more fun that way!)
Then I handed them a piece of cardboard and aluminum foil.
They placed the leaf on the cardboard and wrapped it with the foil.
Afterwards, they traced the outline of the leaf making an awesome imprint!
(Apparently camera flashes and foil don’t get along too well, but the imprint is much better in person!)
ACTIVITY #2 – Imprint Leaf, Style 2
This is an “old school” favorite.
We took a leaf and placed it on the table. Covered it with paper and colored on top to see a new kind of leaf imprint!
The results were awesome!
ACTIVITY #3 – Fall Trees
This activity required some prepping before the craft could begin. I cut little squares out of “fall” colors: orange, yellow and red to represent leaves on a tree.
First we traced and cut out their hands using brown construction paper and glued it to blue paper to represent the sky.
Then, we decorated our trees!
Extra bonus activity:
When we were on our outdoor walk, I had the kids carry empty water bottles. We filled them up with sticks and anything they could find outside. When I ask them the question, “What does Fall smell like?” we open our bottles and sniff!
Activity #4 – Finger Paint
Over the weekend, we went on our first ever camping trip. I have to admit, I wasn’t backing down. We went KOA style in a cabin with a bathroom and kitchen. I couldn’t help myself. Anyways, I did bring lots of activities for the kids to learn there as well. When the boys went to collect firewood, it gave the girls an opportunity for some extra craft time.
I brought printed out leaf patterns. (I will try to find the site where I got these from. On the print out, it just says JC?)
I set her up with finger paint and she colored in her leaf pattern.
But then, she really got into it and the leaf ended up like this…
When they were dried, I cut them out and hung them on our classroom wall.
What Fall crafts are you enjoying this year?
I had to stop by from Dial Moms Mondays Linky Party and check out your great kid crafts. I love these because not only are they perfect for this time of year, but they are also keepsakes. Thanks for sharing!–Deb
