Learning math doesn’t have to be a daunting task for your little ones but instead lots of fun. I can recall my mom writing simple addition on index cards and let me just say boring! Looking at numbers only helped me memorize the answer, but through touch and play I could grasp the concept a lot easier. All kids learn differently and so I try to incorporate many different ways to learn a concept. My preschooler loves this game and has no idea how much he is learning at the same time.
Supplies:
- 20 wooden circles or wooden discs from Micheal’s Arts and Craft Store
- 2 wooden squares
- Black marker for writing
First, write the addition and equal sign in black marker on two discs.
Then, write out the dice numbers. I did one die with written numbers and the second die with pips or dots for all six-sides.
Finally, write out 1-12 on both sides of 6 discs. For example: One disc would have number 1 on the front and 2 on the back, a second circle would have 3 on the front and four on the back etc…
That’s it! It’s game time!
For the game, I set up the plus sign and the equals sign with space in between.
Then placed the pile of numbers 1-12 on the side.
Both kids to throw a die to see what number it landed on…
We then counted out discs and placed them under each number
After we had counted all the discs together, we had to find the correct number in a set pile to the side…
The toddler loved to throw the die and count the pips.
The preschooler was really into figuring out what happened next!
After the blasting math party, I placed everything into a clear container and put it in a bin next to the sofa. He grabs it when he’s looking for something to do and I switch the game out weekly.
How does your preschooler learn to count?
Great idea to make math hands on for little ones! Thanks for sharing!
